LTP Charleston Hosts Special Olympics Unified Pickleball Tournament

June 20, 2025 Pickleball

On Saturday, June 28, LTP Charleston will welcome 20 athletes from Berkeley and Charleston counties for a morning of inclusive competition at the Special Olympics Pickleball Unified Tournament, hosted at LTP Daniel Island.

The event is part of a growing Special Needs Pickleball Program founded by Sue and Steve Gilroy through their nonprofit, Making Anything Possible. The tournament includes two components: an Individual Skills Challenge focused on serving, returns, and volley placement, and a Unified Doubles round robin, where athletes pair with partners—often parents or volunteers—for match play across two levels of ability.

“This program is about creating opportunity and connection for athletes with special needs,” said Steve Gilroy, founder of Making Anything Possible. “We’ve seen it change lives here in Charleston, and we hope to expand this model to neighboring counties in the near future.”

While there are no official seeds, the field includes nine medalists from the recent Special Olympics State Games, including three gold medalists.

The event reflects LTP Charleston’s broader commitment to growing access to racquet sports for all ages and abilities.

“Our courts should be a space where everyone feels welcome to play, grow, and compete,” said Steve Williams, LTP’s Head of Pickleball. “We’re thrilled to be part of this event and support these incredible athletes.”

LTP’s Special Needs Pickleball Program is the only active one in South Carolina’s Area 6, which includes Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties.

Community members are encouraged to attend, cheer on the athletes, and experience the spirit of inclusive sports in action. The tournament is free and open to the public, and promises a heartwarming display of skill, teamwork, and determination.
